ODM party leader Raila Odinga has promied to dedicate four Cabinet Secretaries to the youth if elected the fifth president of Kenya.
The former Prime Minister said this while adressing students at the University of Nairobi. Raila revealed that the youth would be directly involved in the running of the country and aslo appoint a youth to head the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as they formed the majority of the Kenyan population living and working outside the country.
"In the Cabinet, at least any four cabinets, I can say it will be more than four," he stated.
Odinga noted that if the youth are properly empowered, they become a proper source for wealth creation, further stating that this was part of the BBI agenda.
“If you don’t give them (youth) education and the necessary skills, they become drug unto the society but if properly empowered they become a proper source for wealth creation… and that is why we need to attend properly to this issue of the youth,” said Odinga.
While campaigning for the top seat in 2013 and 2017, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto rode on the youth agenda and promised to include them in their government.
However, in the current Cabinet comprising of 22 members, none of them is below the age of 35, the minimum age for one to be considered a youth.
Earlier on, Raila had promised to pledge monthly stipends of Ksh6000 to all the unemployed Kenyas.
